As ACG Portland members entered March’s Peer Growth event at the headquarters of Medical Teams International (MTI) in Tigard, they were about to be treated to something special. Most came to network and hear CEO Jeff Pinneo discuss the business strategies and developments of the Christian global health organization that helps people affected by disaster, conflict and poverty. What most attendees didn’t expect was an extraordinary tour of Medical Teams International’s walk-through museum filled with images, stats and insights about the organization’s relief efforts.
Unlike any Peer Growth event before, ACG Portland members were given a unique look inside an organization with a rich history of global stewardship. MTI was founded by Oregon businessman Ron Post in 1979 and since January 2012, has been under Pinneo’s leadership. In the last 34 years, MTI has mobilized more than 2,000 teams, shipped more than $1.3 billion in medical aid, provided care to 4.5 million people in 53 nations and has sent thousands of volunteers to serve annually in its programs all over the world.
Before joining the non-profit organization, Pinneo was CEO of the for-profit Horizon Air. The Peer Growth forum offered a candid look at the many parallels of running a for-profit and a non-profit business. Pinneo underscored that both strive to provide constant value to “customers,” by answering the questions “Who do we seek to serve?” and “What’s in their best interests?”
MTI wants to be the FedEx of international relief; that is, be everywhere overnight providing timely disaster relief to people in all countries experiencing crises. As timeliness is critical to meet this goal, MTI must respond efficiently and effectively, collaborating with strategic partners (e.g. governments and other relief organizations), which Pinneo explained are key to MTI’s success.
Pinneo’s approach to growth for MTI is based on exceptional business planning gleaned from more than two decades in the executive leadership of a multi-billion dollar for-profit organization. ACG Portland members were immersed in Pinneo’s well-planned business model for MTI’s growth and success, which keeps the non-profit running as smoothly as a well-oiled machine. MTI is growing and operating at peak efficiency to help save and improve the lives of millions of suffering people all over the world and here in the United States every year. Kudos to MTI and Pinneo for this ongoing outstanding work.
